Reasons why an ambulance flashes its blue lights without a siren

There are various reasons why an ambulance flashes its blue lights without a siren.

North West Ambulance Service previously revealed the three most common reasons why this happens and why they may do it during an emergency. One of the first reasons the emergency service do this is when they have a patient on board whose condition means the sirens would cause "distress or discomfort".

The ambulance will flash its blue lights for cars to give way, but will have no noise. The second reason you may not know is to protect vulnerable road users.

"Vulnerable" road users may include cyclists, children, horse and riders and wildlife such as cattle on public roads. The third reason, according to North West Ambulance Service, would be if they are responding to an incident alongside the police who have requested a silent approach with no sirens.

One person said she noticed that paramedics from North West Ambulance Service turns off their sirens if they pass a funeral cortège, she said: "Families appreciate that amazing level of respect."

Another added: "Thanks for this. I always pull over when safe to do so and let an ambulance past. Good to know the reasons why. Keep up your amazing good work."

One woman who commented said: "I’ve often wondered this, especially at traffic lights. Keep doing the amazing job you do, forever grateful."
