Reasons for Nottingham Forest transfer explained as bid claims dismissed

Cardiff boss reveals Surridge blow

Cardiff boss Steve Morison admits he was interested in a move for Sam Surridge but says his interest ended as soon as Stoke City wanted a permanent transfer.

The Bluebirds boss had been eager to bolster his attack ahead of the deadline and revealed he had asked the Potters about a switch for the forward.

But he says their interest ended as soon as it became clear Stoke only wanted a permanent deal and not a loan.

Forest then wrapped up a deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £2m and became one of two deadline day arrivals with Jonathan Panzo also arriving from Dijon.

"We made enquiries for a lot of people in different positions," Morison told Wales Online.

"It’s amazing how quickly people think you make an enquiry and then it’s a done deal. A heck of a lot goes on after that.

Hughton set to return

Former Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton is poised to return to the dugout as the new manager of Ghana.

Hughton has been out of work having left the Reds in September after a dismal start to the campaign saw them lose six of their first seven games.

But the former Brighton and Norwich manager has been in Ghana for the last week according to reports and has held talks over becoming Milovan Rajevac's successor.

And he has already met with the father of Callum Hudson-Odoi with the Chelsea star set to pledge his allegiance to Ghana report GhanaWeb.

Hudson-Odoi, who has represented England at senior level, can still switch allegiances as long as they are under 21 and have not represented their country three times in major competitions.

O'Neill explains Surridge sale

Michael O'Neill says Sam Surridge "stuggled to settle" at Stoke City as he explained why the striker joined Nottingham Forest in a £2million deal on transfer deadline day.

The Potters boss sanctioned the exit of the former Swansea forward on Monday, with Surridge being one of two arrivals at the City Ground before the 11pm deadline.

Surridge is well known to Reds head coach Steve Cooper given the pair worked together during the forward's loan spell at Swansea and he arrives Trentside hoping to play a key role in a promotion push.

Stoke boss O'Neill signed one-time Forest target Josh Maja on a loan deal from Bordeaux as his replacement and felt the deal to sell Surridge was best for both the player and the club.

"We bought Sam in the summer with a long-term objective and unfortunately it didn’t go as well as we’d hoped. The player struggled a bit to settle," he said.

Rowett dismisses Wallace claim

It was a successful end to the January transfer window for Nottingham Forest as they wrapped up deadline day deals for striker Sam Surridge and defender Jonathan Panzo.

They followed Keinan Davis, Steve Cook and Richie Laryea through the door at the City Ground as Steve Cooper strengthened his squad amid the chase for a play-off place.

Perhaps most crucially, prized asset Brennan Johnson will remain with the Reds despite Premier League interest in the talented attacker.

There were a couple of late disappointments, with bids for wingers Josh Bowler of Blackpool and Jed Wallace of Millwall falling short.

The Reds are believed to have submitted several offers for Wallace, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Despite the prospect of losing Wallace for nothing the summer, Millwall held firm.

Lions manager Gary Rowett, the former Derby County and Stoke City boss, has dismissed speculation the club were demanding as much as £9million for the 27-year-old.
