'Really let themselves down' - Jamie Carragher gives damning Everton verdict after Liverpool defeat

Jamie Carragher believes Everton "froze" during the defeat to Liverpool on Monday.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo handed Sean Dyche his first defeat since taking charge at Goodison Park following their impressive win over Arsenal. Ellis Simms deputised for Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the Blues forward failed to shrug off the injury problem that saw him sacrificed against the Gunners.

Both Liverpool goals were avoidable from the Blue half of Merseyside's point of view after Jordan Pickford was caught in no man's land before Conor Coady misjudged Salah's cross allowing for the Dutchman to tap home at the back post.

Jurgen Klopp's side went into the contest looking for their first win of the calendar year as Everton had a spring in their step after James Tarkowski's header got Dyche's reign off to a flying start. But Carragher felt they let themselves down.

"I’ll never be too critical of Everton coming to Anfield, not even at Goodison, not dominating the ball and getting on the ball and making big chances, but I think they’ve really let themselves down," he said.

"They’ve frozen on this occasion, I just haven’t seen that pressing and getting in people’s faces that we saw - certainly last week, and certainly expected them today.

"I really feared how Liverpool would actually cope with Everton in this game having watched that game with Arsenal, certainly watching Liverpool the last few weeks. You have to also give credit to Liverpool, they’re looking like their normal selves in some senses."
