Real Sociedad 3 Real Madrid 1: Jesus Vallejo sent off as 10-man Los Blancos crash to defeat at Anoeta

Joy and despair: Real Sociedad celebrated claiming a league double over Real Madrid at Anoeta (Picture: EPA)

A disastrous, trophy-less season for Real Madrid lurched towards a miserable conclusion on Sunday as Zinedine Zidane's 10-man outfit were well beaten by Real Sociedad in LaLiga.

Brahim Diaz gave Los Blancos a sixth-minute lead from a tight angle on the day former club Manchester City retained the Premier League title, only for Mikel Merino to equalise midway through the first half as he capped off a flowing passing move.

Madrid centre-back Jesus Vallejo was shown a straight red card shortly before the interval after blocking Willian Jose's goal-bound shot with his hand on the line, but Thibaut Courtois was equal to the penalty from the Brazilian that was struck straight down the middle.

Sociedad made their numerical advantage count 10 minutes after the break, however, when Joseba Zaldua rose above Marcelo to beat Courtois - who lost his footing - with a powerful, looping header.

17-year-old forward Ander Barrenetxea extended the hosts' advantage and sealed Real's 11th league defeat of the season by reacting quickest to notch at the near post after Mikel Oyarzabal had struck the woodwork.

Real Madrid are now guaranteed to finish third behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid for the second season in succession and end the 2018-19 campaign against Real Betis at the Bernabeu on Saturday.
