Real reason Christine McVie quit Fleetwood Mac - before rejoining 15 years later

Fleetwood Mac is arguably one of the most popular bands in history, though they've had to endure a tumultuous past filled with a number of line-up changes.

Their most famous line-up consisted of Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, with the group managing to survive the relationship break-ups which inspired 1977's Rumours.

10 years after the iconic album and things started to fall apart as Lindsey made the decision to leave the band to focus on his solo music career.

Christine and Stevie weren't far behind, with the pair causing a fan frenzy in 1990 when they made the decision to quit Fleetwood Mac.

The band's publicist insisted their departure was amicable, but rumours began to swirl about troubles behind-the-scenes.

At the time, some fans speculated that Stevie and Christine had quit over ill feelings towards drummer Mick after he published a tell-all memoir.

The book featured a number of Mick's life experiences, including his affair with bandmate Stevie and his addiction to drugs. Stevie was thought to be furious by the contents of the memoir.

However, Mick denied these rumours and said she hadn't even read his book when she left the group.

Speaking at the time of Christine and Stevie's departure, he said: "At the time that Stevie decided to quit, she hadn't read it.

"I think she and Christine just decided that it was time for them to leave.

"Stevie has a very successful career of her own, and she wanted to devote more time to it.

"Christine recently bought a farmhouse in England, and she wants to settle down and pursue her music and painting."

Christine added: "When the time comes for change, you know it, you feel it. Things can't go on the same as always. You go around in circles."

Christine sadly died on Wednesday morning, with her family saying she was a "revered musician who was loved universally".

"She passed away peacefully at hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30th 2022, following a short illness.
