Real Madrid 'turn down chance' to sign Chelsea star as Liverpool hijack midfield transfer plan

Your morning Chelsea transfer round-up on Monday, December 12.

Liverpool hijack midfielder swoop

According to French outlet Jeunes Footeux, Chelsea and Liverpool are set to lock horns for the signing of Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge. The 24-year-old was once heavily linked with a move to Manchester United but a switch to Old Trafford failed to materialise.

The report states that both Jurgen Klopp and Graham Potter have been eager to sign the Norway international for 'several months' now and they could both makes offers once the January transfer window opens. It's said that Berge is 'eager to leave' Bramall Lane and could do so mid-season.

Chelsea are believed to be in the market for a midfielder amid the uncertain futures of N'Golo Kante and Jorginho, who both see their respective deals at Stamford Bridge expire at the end of the summer. With the Blues in desperate need of reinforcements this winter due to a backlog of injuries, Berge could be a shrewd signing.

Chelsea told to sign Ronaldo

Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender William Gallas has encouraged Graham Potter to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. The 37-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge ahead of the World Cup after he and Manchester United parted company.

"What I know is Todd Boehly wanted Cristiano Ronaldo in his squad when Thomas Tuchel did not," said the Frenchman, as quoted by the Metro. "Maybe it’s a good opportunity for six months to bring Ronaldo to Chelsea.

"But as Ronaldo said, if he wins a World Cup, he’ll retire! It would be good for Ronaldo to go to Chelsea so he can still play in the Champions League and it can benefit Chelsea too because they need a striker."

Madrid snub Kante

According to Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Real Madrid have been offered the chance to sign Kante, but have turned down the chance to do so. The 31-year-old midfielder will be free to begin pre-contract talks with clubs outside of the Premier League in January in order to secure a move upon the end of his Blues deal in June.

The west Londoners can extend his stay at Chelsea at any time, subject to the France international agreeing. Should the Blues look to sanction Kante's exit, the club could either recuperate a small fee in January and relinquish his services for the remainder of the campaign or let him leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Paris Saint-Germain are one of the several clubs that have been heavily linked with a move for Kante in recent months. In March, it was revealed that the £13million-rated midfielder ignored the French giants' advances when they tried to sign him in January.

It's said that Kante reportedly refused to answer calls from Mauricio Pochettino's side and has been subject to several approaches. According to French outlet Le Parisien, club chiefs tried to convince Kante to finally make a move to the France capital during a time when the club was nursing an injury crisis at Cobham.
