Real Madrid hero Rodrygo makes Liverpool goal bet after late strikes against Man City

Rodrygo has confirmed he made a bet with his father ahead of Real Madrid's Champions League semi-final second-leg clash with Manchester City.

The 21-year-old revealed he gambled with his dad that he would score a hat-trick in their vital clash with Pep Guardiola's side.

He didn't manage to net three goals in the end despite striking late twice at the Santiago Bernabeu. City led 4-3 after the first-leg but fell to a 3-1 defeat on the night, losing 6-5 on aggregate.

Riyad Mahrez's late strike had given City a two-goal advantage in the tie, but a quick-fire injury-time double from Rodrygo took the game to extra-time. Los Blancos were awarded a penalty in the 94th minute and Karim Benzema calmly dispatched to send Madrid into their 17th European final.

Rodrygo's first was an instinctive finish, getting on the end of Benzema's low cross at the front post. His second, however, was impressive as he headed home Dani Carvajal's curling cross.

Having only come on in the 70th minute, Rodrygo's cameo appearance was an excellent one and there is no doubt his impact will be remembered for years to come. He almost scored another in extra-time but couldn't beat Ederson from a tight angle.

After failing to grab a hat-trick, Rodrygo has claimed the goal he missed off will be scored against Liverpool in the Champions League final.

The Reds booked their place in Paris with a 5-2 aggregate win over Villarreal.

He said: "I made a bet with my father that I would score three goals and, well, I only scored two. I'm missing one, I will get that one in the final."

Rio Ferdinand praised Carlo Ancelotti for his inspired substitutions during the game, with Rodrygo making an impact from the bench, while Eduardo Camavinga and Marcos Asenjo also came on.

He told BT Sport : "Carlo Ancelotti, we talk about the great managers of the modern era, he has to be in the mix to be at the top of that tree. What he has been doing, it’s incredible.

"The substitutions (Ancelotti made), Rodrygo and Eduardo Camavinga especially, wow. Phenomenal substitutions that impacted the game."
