Real Madrid handed triple injury boost ahead of Liverpool game in Champions League

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has provided an injury update on three of his players as the clash against Liverpool draws near.

The Reds are due to play the Spanish club in the last-16 of the Champions League later this month. The first leg is due to take place at Anfield on February 21, before the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 15.

Ahead of the game, Liverpool are facing a significant number of injuries. Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Arthur Melo are all currently on the sidelines. Roberto Firmino is "getting closer" according to manager Jurgen Klopp, while Fabinho missed the Wolves defeat due to illness.

Real Madrid are also suffering from a series of injuries. Lucas Vazquez and Ferland Mendy are already likely to be absent for the first leg against Liverpool.

The La Liga giants were dealt further blows recently when goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and striker Karim Benzema became injury doubts, while defender Eder Militao is still recovering from a fitness issue.

Madrid are due to face Al Ahly in the semi-final of the Club World Cup on Wednesday night. Ancelotti gave an update on the three aforementioned players, and provided hope that all of them will be available soon.

Regardless of whether Madrid beat Al Ahly on Wednesday night, they will play a final or third/fourth place play-off against a side from the other semi-final, Flamengo or Al-Hilal, on Saturday.

Ancelotti says Benzema, Courtois and Militao are ‘on the list’ to be included in the squad for Saturday, but only on one condition.

Ancelotti said in his press conference on Tuesday: "The three are on the list, they have stayed in Madrid to continue with the treatment, and if they are well they will return on Saturday."
