Real Madrid 'eye Andy Robertson transfer' in bid to take advantage of Liverpool situation

Real Madrid are eyeing up a move for Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.

Robertson, 29, has three years left on his contract at Anfield but could leave the Reds this summer. Jurgen Klopp's side are set to miss out on Champions League football and Los Blancos are trying to take advantage and sign the Scotland international, who impressed against Carlo Ancelotti's Real in March.

Los Blancos are in the market for a new left-back given Ferland Mendy's injury issues, with Eduoard Camavinga often having to play in that position. Mendy has made just 17 LaLiga appearances this season as Real were beaten to the title by arch-rivals Barcelona with four matches to go.

Ancelotti is a fan of Robertson and wants to add him to his squad, considering the experience he has already had in the Champions League and in one of Europe's top divisions. Robertson has been a mainstay in the Liverpool side since his move from Hull in 2017, winning every major trophy possible.

This season, Robertson has grabbed eight assists in 34 Premier League games. However, Robertson hasn't been as effective, especially going forward, since Trent Alexander-Arnold's position change. The right-back has moved into a more midfield role, with Jordan Henderson covering when he goes forward.

But that has meant Robertson has had to stay a little further back, so Liverpool aren't as exposed on the counter-attack when in possession. He could be tempted to move to Real to showcase his best qualities, should Klopp stick to that system in the long-term.

Speaking last month, Klopp said after his side's 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest: "We cannot have one full-back in the centre of the field and the other one constantly high up on the left side. That’s difficult. In the first moment of the build-up, yes, his positioning has changed slightly. But [Robertson’s] obviously a very experienced player, a very smart player and he knows when we need him there."

Klopp continued: "Robbo has to judge the situations when he can be involved, like, I don’t know which goal number at Leeds, but when Diogo passes the ball and then he overlaps and passes the ball to Cody, Mo, goal. These situations are still there."

Liverpool could be set for a busy summer ahead as Klopp tries to bolster his squad ahead of challenging for the Champions League next season. The Reds are expected to miss out on Europe's top club competition for the first time in six years, barring a mini-miracle.

Klopp's men need Manchester United to lose both of their remaining matches against Chelsea and Fulham at home while beating Southampton on the final day of the season to qualify for the Champions League. However, Erik ten Hag's United have lost just one at home this season - meaning that scenario is very unlikely.
