Real Madrid have been dealt an injury blow with their Champions League clash against Liverpool on the horizon.

The Reds have been drawn against the current holders in the last 16 with the first leg taking place later this month. The two teams are will meet at Anfield on February 21, before the second leg in the Spanish capital on March 15.

It will see a rematch of the final from last season’s competition in Paris. Liverpool lost 1-0 at the Stade de France thanks to a goal from Vinicius Jr.

With the next instalment of the rivalry between the two clubs looming, the Madrid appear to have been dealt an injury blow. Reports from Spain have claimed that Ferland Mendy is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

It has been reported by AS that Mendy is suffering from a “muscle injury” in his left leg. The report states that the left-back will be sidelined until April with the problem, having picked up the injury against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey last week.

Mendy is not the only Real Madrid player to suffer an injury. Lucas Vazquez is also on the sidelines, and is expected to miss the first leg against Liverpool.

For the Reds, they have the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Roberto Firmino, Arthur Melo and Ibrahima Konate unavailable for selection. Only time will tell how many of the injured group will be fit in time to face Madrid in the first leg.
