Earning the shotgun will help you massively when going through Resident Evil Village’s brand new Shadows of Rose DLC. The short but sweet DLC campaign will have players returning to Castle Dimitrescu as Rose Winters, and she will need to arm herself as much as possible before moving forward.
The shotgun can be found fairly early, but unlocking it takes quite a bit more effort. To get inside its cage you’ll need the Triocular Key, an essential item, and even getting that requires solving a painting puzzle that’ll require an extra piece before completion. The shotgun is ultimately optional, but everything else is key to finishing Shadows of Rose, so make sure to read our instructions below to get everything done as quickly and easily as possible.

Gallery painting puzzle solution – Shadows of Rose
Once you can access the stairs in the Main Hall, you’ll be able to enter the Gallery, where you’ll find six picture frames hanging, with five paintings inserted. Two paintings are fixed in place and immovable.
The main hint is found on the back of the Frog painting. Essentially, predators must go on one side of the room, while their prey must face them on the other side. On one side a butterfly is fixed in place, while a wolf is fixed in place on the other.
Here’s the solution:
- Lamb painting faces Wolves painting.
- Frog painting faces Snake painting.
- Butterfly painting faces Spider painting.
The problem is that the Snake painting isn’t actually in the Gallery, and you won’t be able to immediately find it.
Final painting location, snake – Shadows of Rose
After finding the second mask and making your way out of the basement, you’ll emerge near Lady Dimitrescu’s bedroom. Make sure to enter her room and exit through the left side door. The painting will be found on the table next to the bathtub. Weird place for a painting, sure, but now you can complete the Gallery painting puzzle.
How to unlock the Shotgun – Shadows of Rose
Once you’re able to return to the Gallery and place the paintings in their proper orientation, the cage will open up and reward you with the Triocular Key. Not only can this key unlock the Triocular doors and locks you may find around the mansion, but it will also unlock the Shotgun that you can find in the Dining Room, directly below the Gallery.
