RE8 Shadows of Rose: Mold core prison puzzle solution

After you have finally earned yourself the third and final mask in Resident Evil Village’s new DLC, Shadows of Rose, Rose Winters will get almost immediately kidnapped and imprisoned in a trap room. This room is filled with mold cores – otherwise known as sclerotia – and the evil version of the merchant in this game goads you as he fills the room with mostly fake cores.

You need to find the correct core, and luckily, your guardian angel Michael will be here to help, at least a bit. You can guess your way out, but that won’t be very effective. Just read through our tips below to clear through this puzzle quickly and easily.

For everything you need to get through Shadows of Rose, take a look at our full Castle Dimitrescu walkthrough.

How to solve the counterfeit core prison puzzle – Shadows of Rose

Michael, your helpful guardian, will write messages on the blank spots on the walls to help point towards the correct core to destroy. Because there is a time limit, guessing and destroying cores randomly will take too long, and will likely end in failure.

Just follow Michael’s advice, and if that’s not enough, look below for our full instructions on making it out of the prison alive.

Counterfeit core prison puzzle solution – Shadows of Rose

The first core is “lower than barrel” and on the right side of the room, on the opposite side of the bars to you.

The second core is inside the broken wall inside your prison cell, the largest core you see. But once you aim your focus ability at the core, an enemy will appear. Use your focus to stun them, and then shoot them down before finishing off the largest core.

The amount of ground you can walk on will now shrink dramatically. The final core is in the center of the ceiling – taking this core out will finally drop the bars, freeing you from the prison.
