RCB vs CSK IPL 2023: Chennai Super Kings finish on top in run-fest against Royal Challengers Bangalore

Pip RCB by 8 runs after scoring 226/6

BENGALURU: On Monday night, if anyone mistook the M Chinnaswamy stadium here for the Chepauk, they could be pardoned. Chennai Super Kings fans, who probably outnumbered Royal Challengers Bangalore's loyalists, painted the stadium yellow.

On the field, the teams matched strides for most parts of the high-scoring contest which lived up to its marquee billing.

On a surface which was an absolute belter, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men bossed over the home team bowlers to score an imposing 226/6, which included 17 maximums and 12 fours.

In reply, RCB came within touching distance of overhauling the target. Needing 19 runs off the last over, they finished with 218/8 to hand CSK an eight-run victory.

What separated the two teams was RCB's inability to cash in on the dropped catches, while CSK bowlers took wickets at crucial junctures, which swung the match in their favour.

IPL 2023: CSK survive Du Plessis-Maxwell storm to beat RCB

RCB's opening pair of Faf du Plessis (62; 33b; 5x4; 4x6) and Virat Kohli (6) have often provided the early impetus. But on the day, Kohli departed early, a swing and a miss off 'Impact Player' Akash Singh, the inside edge landing on his toe before finding the stumps.

With Mahipal Lomror following soon after, RCB were reeling at 15/2. Skipper Du Plessis, who was dropped on 0, and Glen Maxwell (76; 36b; 3x4; 8x6) put in the hard yards to pull RCB out of the woods with their quickfire 126-run association for the third wicket.

With RCB needing 68 off 36 deliveries, Du Plessis miscued Moeen Ali and Dhoni collected the skier. That was the beginning of the end of RCB's victory march, Dinesh Karthik (28) provided a fleeting hope, but did not stay long enough to justify his finisher tag.

Conway-Dube show

Invited to bat, Devon Conway (83; 45b; 6x4; 6x6) and Shivam Dube (52; 27b, 2x4; 5x6) tore into the RCB bowling attack with a ruthless display of power hitting.

The opening over was the only time in the innings where RCB could tie down the opposition. RCB, who have had good success with the new ball thus far in the season, got a breakthrough when Ruturaj Gaikwad's flick off Siraj landed in Parnell's hand.

Before the momentum could shift, Ajinkya Rahane neutralised it during his 20-ball-37 run cameo. With CSK sailing, Wanindu Hasaranga accounted for Rahane, who was bowled by a googly.

Conway and Dube joined forces to deal in boundaries. If Dube was all about elegance and timing, Conway's innings was highlighted by power and footwork.

In the 16th over, Harshal Patel rattled the stumps of Conway with a slower one. In the last five overs, CSK lost four wickets, but managed to milk 61 runs.
