The Chavalit Soemprungsuk Foundation is holding "Less Is Ok", a retrospective posthumous exhibition that celebrates the life of legendary Thai artist Chavalit Soemprungsuk, at the RCB Galleria 1 of River City Bangkok, Charoen Krung 24, from Saturday to April 27.
The exhibition will reveal how content and fulfilling his life must have been to be able to create artworks with such precision and simplicity and perceive their perfection and completion.
Viewers will be taken on a journey to explore various angles of his life beyond his works in many aspects, including his dedication to art, his energy, his openness to new ideas and his support for younger artists.
There are more of his personal qualities that many may not be familiar with, including his relationships, unique fashion sense, sense of humour and sometimes cheekiness, forthrightness, sharpness and quick wit.These are aspects that many who had known him loved as part of his charm and character, while others might experience them for the first time in this exhibition.
The works on show are like his legacies that reflect his life from a young age to his last moments. Pure and simple, they feature lines, forms and colours that were derived directly from his thoughts, feelings and pleasure.
Chavalit is today recognised as a leading artist in the field of abstract art and non-objective art and one of the most prominent figures of modern art in Thailand.
He was one of the last groups of students to have a chance to study with Silpa Bhirasri and was the first Thai student to ever attend Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.
Unsatisfied with its teaching style, however, he left the school and started his career as a professional artist. He was the first and only Thai artist who earned accolade as a national artist of the Netherlands.
