RB Salzburg 1-1 Bayern Munich: Kingsley Coman spares blushes with German giants looking way off the pace

Bayern Munich laboured to a disappointing draw away at Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday evening.

Having been beaten 4-1 by VfL Bochum over the course of the weekend, Bayern looked just as fragile from the opening minutes at the Stadion Salzburg.

Considering the strength of the German school of pressing amongst the best teams in Europe over the last few years, it seemed reasonable to assume that Julian Nagelsmann’s side would simply have too much for their Austrian opposition.

Still, it was Salzburg who looked like the biggest exponents of that style, causing problems with almost every attack after winning possession back in the middle of the park. When early substitute Chukwubuike Adamu powered the Austrian champions ahead after twenty minutes, it was the least they deserved.

From there, Bayern continued to labour. A sloppy Niklas Sule throw-in almost caused Benjamin Pavard to concede a penalty amid a distinct lack of attacking threat.

While goalkeeper Philipp Kohn was called upon more often around the hour mark, saving well from Kingsley Coman, the German giants rarely looked like truly threatening.

Finally, however, Salzburg wilted.

A deep cross from Pavard was flicked on by Thomas Muller, allowing Coman to slot in just as the blushes began.

On this evidence, the other Champions League contenders will not fear Bayern Munich.
