RB Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff blames Rangers' defensive tactics for lack of atmosphere in Germany

RB Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff blames Rangers' defensive tactics for lack of atmosphere in Germany

RB LEIPZIG chief Oliver Mintzlaff has blamed Rangers' tactics during the first leg of their Europa League semi-final for the lack of atmosphere in Germany.

The Germans ran out 1-0 winners at the Red Bull Arena before Rangers turned the tie on its head at Ibrox in the second leg.

There was no comparison in terms of atmosphere between the two games with Rangers supporters without doubt topping their German counterparts in terms of noise.

But Leipzig CEO Mintzlaff has put lack of atmosphere in Germany down to the defensive set up of Giovanni van Bronckhorst's team.

Speaking on Sport 1, he claimed: "It's very hard to create an atmosphere when you're playing against a team that played so defensively with two banks of five."

Leipzig have been criticised for their atmosphere in comparison to more traditional German clubs in the Bundesliga.

Domenico Tedesco was frustrated to see his Leipzig side give away a goal with Rangers' first chance - but he admits the Ibrox crowd make winning in Govan difficult.

He said: “I say well done to the stadium, it was the best I’ve ever seen.”

He added to Eurosport: "We are extremely disappointed.

"Rangers took the lead with the first chance.

"Of course, it doesn't necessarily help in front of a crowd like that.

"Whenever we tried to overplay the pressing in the first half we were completely lacking in physicality. "We hardly managed to tie the ball down.

"Every time we managed to do that and went forward, it became dangerous.

"We knew we'd come back in the second half. In our best phase of play, we got the third goal but we concede goals too easily.

"We've lost stability in the last few games and we have to regain it very quickly."
