Ray McKinnon is to remain as Forfar Athletic manager - after Duncan Ferguson left Forest Green Rovers.
The Loons boss had been the subject of an approach to join Ferguson as his No. 2. McKinnon had asked to make the move and had joined Ferguson at the Lawn Stadium, with Forfar putting an interim coaching team in charge. Record Sport exclusively broke the story that Ferguson was set to leave Forest Green and that has since been confirmed by the English League Two outfit.
It had looked to leave McKinnon in limbo but Forfar left the door open and McKinnon will now return to his former post. A Forfar statement read: "Forfar Athletic Football Club today can confirm that Ray McKinnon is to remain the manager of our football club."
The 52-year-old will now take training this week ahead of their weekend friendly against Highland League outfit Formartine United. McKinnon only took up the manager’s position at Station Park last November. Assistant manager Steve Fallon and coaching team Wayne Henderson and Mark Farrell had taken charge of the weekend friendly with Montrose.
McKinnon had been keen to return to full-time football with his friend and former Dundee United teammate Ferguson. Forest Green chairman Dale Vince confirmed Ferguson’s exit. He joined them in January but was unable to keep them in League One.
Vince said: "It’d been a privilege to work with Dunc these last few months and this was a very difficult decision to make. I’m grateful to Dunc for joining us in such difficult circumstances and for all of his hard work at the club. But I feel this is overall the right decision for everyone and I wish Dunc well in his next coaching role. We are parting as friends. You can’t ask for much more than that."
