Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills beat the Baltimore Ravens tonight but didn’t do it via the air attack. Allen, who is definitely the front-runner for the league’s Most Valuable Player award now, went 16-22 passing for only 127 yards, or a meager 5.8 yards per attempt, in his team’s 27-25 divisional round playoff win.
He did not toss a touchdown or throw an interception. Simply put, the Ravens pass defense, which finished the season second to last in the NFL in passing yards allowed, shut him down.
For most of the season, the Ravens were dead last in the league in passing yards allowed per game, but here and now, Allen couldn’t even get a buck-thirty against them.
So the team’s weakest link, or Achilles heel, came up huge in the season’s biggest game. That is the true definition of irony right there.
And it wasn’t like Buffalo did much on the ground either, as they averaged a not-awful but not-great 4.1 yards per carry. They could only grind out 147 yards on the ground against Baltimore.
As you might expect, the Ravens won the yardage battle decisively (416-273).
Again, these numbers don’t matter much—only the final score does. And with that, another very long offseason begins. It starts a week earlier than last year, which adds to the massive disappointment.
