Rate the Everton players after the 2-1 defeat away to Aston Villa

Everton went in search of their first points of the new Premier League season this afternoon against Steve Gerrard's Aston Villa at Villa Park.

The Blues were looking to kick on after suffering a 1-0 opening match defeat to Frank Lampard's former club Chelsea at Goodison Park. And with new signings Conor Coady and Amadou Onana included in the matchday squad, hopes were increased.

But Everton went 1-0 down in the first half after a strike from Danny Ings, with more bad news for Lampard following shortly after as Abdoulaye Doucoure was forced off injured.

Emi Buendia doubled the Villa lead in the second half, before a thrilling finish in which a Lucas Digne own goal gave Everton a glimmer of hope - but it was not to be.
