Everton suffered their second straight Premier League defeat as they were beaten 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Blues were hoping to bounce back after last weekend's 2-1 home loss to Manchester United. But while a trip to high-flying Spurs was always going to be a tough task, they did have their chances in an even first half.
However, Demarai Gray and Amadou Onana wasted the opportunities. and they were made to pay in the second half when Harry Kane got his customary goal against Everton, rifling in the penalty he had won after being felled in the box by his England colleague Jordan Pickford.
And Pickford was beaten for the second time late on when one-time Blues target Pierre-Emile Højbjerg kept his composure to finish off a breakaway move from Tottenham, whose introduction of Yves Bissouma for the injured Richarlison, who was making his first appearance against the club he left in the summer, helped changed the game in their favour.
