Rate Newcastle United's players as Callum Wilson inspires win over Southampton

Eddie Howe showcased his managerial skills with a perfectly timed substitution to inspire a second-half comeback against Southampton. Newcastle United came from behind to win 3-1 at St. James' Park and take a huge step towards Champions League football.

Anthony Gordon was given his first start at St. James' Park in the Premier League after Sean Longstaff was ruled out with injury, but the January arrival squandered two golden opportunities to put the Toon ahead. They proved costly with Stuart Armstrong putting the Saints ahead on the brink of half-time.

Howe introduced Callum Wilson in the interval and the Magpies number nine scored a brace to turn the game on it's head, either side of a Theo Walcott own goal. Wilson moved onto 15 goals for the season and will feel aggrieved not to have grabbed his hattrick with one effort ruled out for offside, whilst also hitting the crossbar.

The brace from Wilson makes it nine goal involvements in the calendar month of April - eight of those being goals with one assist. The result means Newcastle are on the brink of mathematically securing their place in the top four, with just five games remaining.
