Rat infested Indian restaurant shut down after poo found in food prep areas

A rat infested restaurant has been shut down after poo was found in food preparation areas. The Indian restaurant was forced to pay over £1000 a will remain closed until the infestation has been eradicated.

The East London establishment underwent an inspection from Environmental Health officers last month following a complaint from a customer. Officials visited Ranna on January 25 and found evidence of a significant rodent infestation.

MyLondon reports that officers also found deposits of dirt and grease that indicated a lack of proper food hygiene standards being maintained in the restaurant. Following the inspection, the proprietor of Ranna was hit with a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order and ordered to pay Council costs of £1096 at a hearing at Thames Magistrates’.

The Walthamstow business was forced to close on February 1 despite extensive cleaning, repairs and pest control measures being introduced by the eatery. It will remain closed until a follow-up inspection can confirm the eradication of any kind of pest infestation.

Cllr Khevyn Limbajee, Cabinet Member for Community Safety at Waltham Forest Council, said: “I shudder to think how long this risk to public health might have remained were it not for the swift and decisive actions of Council Environmental Health Officers.

"Rather than just a means of punishment, I hope this closure order sets the proprietors on the right course towards improving their health and safety practices permanently and restoring the confidence of their customers as well as the Council.”
