Rare 'war whisky' distilled by Macallan in 1940 up for sale for £92,000

A rare single malt whisky distilled during WW2 by The Macallan has gone on sale for £92,000.

The Macallan distillery has produced just 288 decanters of the Scotch from their oldest ever cask, The Reach, which is more than 80 years old.

It was distilled in the spring of 1940, before the war forced the distillery to close for the first time in its history from 1942 until 1945.

Master whisky maker Kirsteen Campbell decided the cask had reached peak maturity and said it was a tribute to the people who made the 'precious' spirit.

The rare whisky is presented in a cabinet made from a fallen elm tree - thought to have been part of The Macallan Estate in 1940.

And the decanter is supported by a detailed sculpture of three disembodied bronze hands, created by Scottish sculptor Saskia Robertson.

One of the hands represents Kirsteen, who selected the cask, while another was created from an artist's impression of a stillman to represent the wartime workers.

The other is the hand of one-time chairman, screenwriter and producer Allan Shiach, whose grandfather headed the company in 1940.

Kirsteen said: "It is an honour to introduce The Reach.

"Created during a turbulent time in the world, this extraordinary expression showcases The Macallan's history, ingenuity and unmistakable strength of character.

"It's also a tribute to the people who made this precious whisky and their enduring spirit, which never wavered.

"Its deep auburn hue is the first hint of this remarkable whisky's astonishing depth, offering notes of dark chocolate, sweet cinnamon and aromatic peat, leading on to treacle toffee, crystallised ginger and charred pineapple, before giving way to an intensely rich, sweet and smoky finish."

Although this is officially this distillery's oldest, the venue, based in Craigellachie, Moray, had already launched a couple of limited-edition bottles dating back 70 years.

The most recent was Tales of The Macallan Volume I, released in August last year, which features a single malt from 1950.
