A rare tornado warning has been issued for parts of the UK and Ireland. As we begin a week in which unsettling weather has been forecast throughout the country, the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) has cautioned that 'severe thunderstorms' could be on the way.
TORRO defines a severe thunderstorm as producing one or more of the following:
- one or more tornadoes and / or waterspouts
- hail with diameter of at least 20mm
- non-tornadic winds gusting to 55 mph or more at surface (but which are not part of synoptic-scale straight-line winds of such velocities)
TORRO went on to state that "thunder/lightning does not necessarily need to be present for any of the conditions listed above to occur." The unlikely phenomenon could affect parts of South West England, a portion of North West England, the West Midlands and Wales from Monday, September 5, to the morning of September 6. It appears Nottinghamshire may just fall outside of the warning area.

In tonight's forecast by the Met Office, the organisation has predicted: "Areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms moving northwards across much of the UK. Becoming drier in the south with some clear spells. Windy in the far north."
