Rare tornado hits California coast as record warmth melts snowpack

Special Envoy from the Office of the President of Kenya for Climate Change Ali Mohamed speaks to the media, at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), in Dubai

Rare Tornado Hits Central California Coast as High Winds Cause Damage

A rare tornado touched down on the central California coast, causing damage and sending officials to assess the extent of the destruction. The region experienced strong winds from a passing storm earlier this week, which is now making its way eastward, bringing rain to the Midwest and Plains.

This recent bout of severe weather has had a significant impact on the snowpack across the United States. Approximately a month ago, the country had around 40-42 percent of its land covered in snow. However, the record warmth that has followed has caused that coverage to drop to just 22.5 percent, leaving a substantial deficit.

Snow lovers may have to wait a little longer for their anticipated winter wonderland, but there are hints of a possible early next week snowstorm on the horizon. In the meantime, along the west coast, the threat from the heavy rain brought by the atmospheric river event is gradually diminishing. Light showers have been reported in and around Los Angeles and San Diego, adding to the existing rainfall but not significantly increasing it.

As the original weather system moves on, another upper-level low is delivering snow to the Western US, particularly in high elevation regions. Some areas in Arizona and parts of Nevada have already received over 2 feet of snow under these conditions. The snow and rain accumulation is expected to continue through Saturday, reaching the Gulf Coast states, including Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.

Despite the potential for heavy rain in the southern regions, the focus remains on the record warmth sweeping across the country. Weather predictions indicate over 200 potential record warm temperatures in the coming days. This prolonged warmth has had a detrimental effect on the snowpack, disappointing skiers and snowboarders who eagerly await winter sports opportunities.

The current data reveals an average temperature increase of 15 degrees, significantly above the norm. This trend is expected to persist in the near future, presenting concerns for climate implications. These noteworthy shifts in weather patterns highlight the importance of discussing and addressing the long-term effects of climate change.

While the highs continue to break records, many individuals, like avid winter sports enthusiasts, are left hoping for a return of colder temperatures and greater snowfall. As climate patterns evolve, it becomes increasingly crucial to engage in conversations surrounding the impact of these changing weather conditions on our environment.
