It’s time to check your purses, coin jar, and down the back of your sofa, because a rare 50p coin has sold on eBay for £150.
The Liverpool Echo reported that the lucky seller received nine offers on the coin before selling it for 300 times its original value.
So what coin should you be looking out for, if you want to turn 50p into £150?
Kew Gardens’ Chinese Pagoda 50p
The coin in question is the Chinese Pagoda coin which was launched in 2009 to commemorate Kew Gardens’ 250 year anniversary. The Royal Mint estimates that around 210,000 coins were made.
The Royal Mint says that: “The sheer variety [of commemorative 50p coins] has sparked a collecting craze but of all the 50p coins, the Kew Gardens 50p is arguably the most sought-after.
“Nothing gets people excited quite like this original 2009 design.”
They explained that the coin is so rare because: “Demand for the 50p denomination was not high at the time of release into circulation which explains the low mintage of this particular design.”
However, the same coin was also released in 2019 to celebrate 50 years of the 50p, but this edition isn’t worth as much.
But if you’re lucky enough to own the 2009 edition, how much could you get for it?
Other Kew Gardens coin sellers on eBay are currently receiving bids within the £120-£160 range for their 50p.
