Rare 50p coin sells for £790 and there are more out there

A very rare 50p coin has sold on eBay for a staggering £790 after a tense bidding war.

The coin was released in 2019 and features the Gruffalo from the children's book of the same name. The piece was minted in 22 carat gold and just 600 of the coins were produced.

Royal Mint lists the coin for £1,020 on its website. However, it currently does not have any in stock.

Last week, one lucky eBay seller received £790 for theirs after the listing sparked a 30-way bidding war. The item was listed as "The Gruffalo 2019 UK 50p Gold Proof Coin Very Rare Limited 600 ONLY MADE…MINT".

From a starting price of just £0.99, bids quickly jumped. The coin was sold for some 1580 times its face value.

It's always worth checking your change for some of the rarest coins in circulation across the UK. Earlier this month, one lucky person sold a rare 50p coin for £175.

The coin was released in 2009 to mark 250 years since Kew Gardens opened in 1759 and the Royal Mint estimate around 210,000 were made. It features the famous Chinese Pagoda at the Royal Botanic Garden on the tails side with the Queen's face as normal on the other.

If you find a Kew Gardens 50p in your change soon, the first thing you should do is check the date on it. This is because the Royal Mint reissued a batch of the coins in 2019 to celebrate 50 years of the 50p - and this version doesn’t tend to sell for as much.

But you could still be in for an exciting payday if you find one of these, as they can sell for between £70 and £80 on eBay.
