Rare 50p coin sells for £225 on eBay

A rare 50p coin has sold for £225 on eBay and there are more in circulation. The coin was released in 2009 and features an athlete doing the high jump. It was designed as part of a Blue Peter competition, with the image drawn by nine-year-old Florence Jackson, reports The Echo.

20,000 of the coins were minted in time for the 2012 Olympic Games, and while they were never officially put into circulation, many did enter everyday transactions. The coins were originally sold for £1.09 - but some have sold for as much as £286 on eBay in recent months.

One seller has just received £225.01 for theirs after listing it on the online auction site. The coin attracted 17 bids, with the sale price jumping considerably after starting at £9.99.

The item, which sold on June 19, was listed as a "rare uncirculated Blue Peter winner's edition 50p coin pack 2009".
