Rapist from Manchester branded a 'dangerous sexual predator' dies during life sentence at 'Monster Mansion'

A rapist branded a 'dangerous sexual predator' by a judge has died in prison. Robin Crago, from Withington in Manchester, was 49 when he was jailed for life in January, 2006.

Crago, formerly of Mauldeth Road West, pleaded guilty at Manchester Crown Court to the rape of a teenage girl and four other rapes. He was given sentences totalling 22 years for 12 other serious sexual offences.

A published report reveals Crago, who was serving his sentence at Wakefield Prison and was 65, died in hospital whilst in custody on August 24, 2022. The prison is nicknamed 'Monster Mansion' due to the number of high-profile prisoners serving sentences there.

The report from the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman revealed Crago suffered from diabetes which, together with high blood pressure and obesity, had caused damage to some organs, notably his kidneys. In 2011, he was diagnosed with stage three chronic kidney disease.

By January 2020, reveals the report, his condition had worsened and later he required dialysis treatment, although he had periods where he did not comply with his treatment. During 2021 and 2022 he missed dozens of dialysis sessions, reports Leeds Live.

In a report, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman said: "Mr Crago's health declined as the result of his intermittent engagement with his dialysis, and in 2022 his mobility was affected, and he had several falls. Following one of these falls on 15 August, healthcare staff at Wakefield discussed Mr Crago's case with his hospital renal consultant.

"They said that given his frailty and refusal to attend dialysis, that it might be time to consider end of life care rather than treatment.

"A healthcare member of staff discussed his situation with Mr Crago and that he was at high risk of death without treatment. Mr Crago said he was not sure that he wanted to die and wanted a couple of days to think it over. He agreed to go to hospital and was taken there late the same evening."

The report added: "In hospital, Mr Crago was initially uncooperative with hospital staff, but by the afternoon of 16 August he agreed to have treatment. Over the following days he had three sessions of dialysis.

"But by 22 August, he had decided to refuse any further treatment despite the attempts of hospital and prison staff to persuade him. Therefore, a hospital doctor told him that treatment would be changed to end of life care. Mr Crago died in hospital on 24 August."

The Ombudsman concluded in the report: "The clinical reviewer concluded that the clinical care Mr Crago received at Wakefield was equivalent to that which he could have expected to receive in the community. However, he said that better and more frequent formal capacity assessments would have been appropriate given Mr Crago’s repeated refusals to accept treatment."

The sentencing judge told Crago as he jailed him: "This is one of the most serious cases of sexual offences to come before this court. Anyone hearing the facts cannot fail to be affected by revulsion and horror at the nature, ferocity and extent of the sexual offences you committed against your victims.

"You preyed on them for your own perverted desires and gratification with no thoughts for your victims. You are to be regarded as a dangerous sexual predator. You committed a catalogue of serious criminal offences against various females."
