Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has been told in no uncertain terms that only fit players will be selected for the World Cup by France boss Didier Deschamps.
The former Real Madrid centre-back is currently attempting to recover from an injury he suffered in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea earlier this month, having been withdrawn in tears. He is expected to miss all of the Red Devils’ upcoming matches before the Premier League breaks for the upcoming tournament in Qatar.
Speaking after the defender’s injury in West London, United boss Erik ten Hag said: “Rapha Varane isn't in the squad. He will be out, certainly until the World Cup so he will not play in this block [of games] for Man United.”
Varane’s place at the World Cup is now is under severe doubt should he fail to get back to full fitness over the next few weeks. Les Bleus manager Deschamps has confirmed that he does not plan on taking any injured players to Qatar in what appears to be a direct message to the United defender.
He said: "It's clear and clean. That I said. I've never embarked with an injured player for a big competition. The only thing that is certain is that I will not take a player who is not able to play at the start of the competition. Then it’s on a case-by-case basis.
"But leaving on a big competition with players who are not suitable, already it occupies too much attention, and for those who have to play, it also monopolises the medical staff. Me, I consider that we must leave with valid and capable players."

Despite Deschamps’ message, it appears that he is remaining optimistic over the 29-year-old’s chances having allayed fears over a serious problem.
He continued: "For Raphaël [Varane], it is less problematic in this aspect, because it is a muscle injury."
Should the United star miss the upcoming tournament, he will no doubt be hugely disappointed after playing a key role to claim his country's second title in Russia. He played every single minute of the tournament and even captained his nation in their final group fixture against Denmark.
They kick off their latest campaign against Australia before facing the Dane’s once more. Deschamps’ troops round off their group games against Tunisia.
Varane has so far made 11 appearances for the Red Devils this term and was forging a promising relationship with summer arrival Lisandro Martinez before he was struck down with injury.
Victor Lindelof played in his place in the 3-0 midweek win over Sheriff Tiraspol midweek, whilst club captain Harry Maguire also made his return from his own injury as a substitute.
