Raphael Varane hands Manchester United injury scare ahead of Liverpool clash

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is reportedly set to have a late fitness test ahead of their huge clash against Liverpool.

United make their way to Anfield to take on their bitter rivals on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League. Jurgen Klopp’s side are looking to avoid a repeat of the reverse fixture which them lose 2-1 at Old Trafford in August.

Liverpool are not helped by having a number of players injured. But United have several injury concerns of their own - and now it looks like another player could be added to their list.

According to the Mail Online, Varane will have a fitness test on Sunday morning to see if he is fit to face Liverpool. It has been reported that the France international has been complaining of leg pain in recent days and will now go undergo an exam “after breakfast” on the day of the match.

It has been claimed that United are still hopeful that Varane will be available. However, the report adds that Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have been “placed on standby” to be introduced should the World Cup winner be sidelined.

Should Varane not pass the fitness test, he would join Christian Eriksen, Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial as confirmed absentees. United are hopeful that Luke Shaw and Jadon Sancho will be declared fit to face Liverpool, though, after suffering from injury and illness, respectively.

In the opposite corner, the Reds have at least four players out injured for Sunday’s big match. Joe Gomez, Luis Diaz, Thiago Alcantara and Calvin Ramsay are all sidelined.
