Ranking Newcastle and every other Premier League club’s January transfer business

Premier League clubs went crazy on deadline day as several star names made last-minute moves to pastures new.

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Dele Alli’s transfers to Barcelona and Everton were the headline deals but clubs across the division were active until the dying embers of the window.

Newcastle completed deals for five players last month, with Brighton’s Dan Burn and Aston Villa’s Matt Targett last through the door at St James’ Park.

However, many clubs did not make a single signing - a throwback to how Newcastle would traditionally operate under the previous regime.

ChronicleLive grades every Premier League team’s transfer window and looks at what more they could have done to improve…

1. Aston Villa: A

In: Lucas Digne (Everton, £25m), Philippe Coutinho (Barcelona, loan), Robin Olsen (Roma, loan), Calum Chambers (Arsenal, undisclosed)

Out: Anwar El Ghazi (Everton, loan), Matt Targett (Newcastle, loan), Wesley (Internacional, loan), Keinan Davis (Nottingham Forest, loan), Cameron Archer (Preston, loan), Louie Barry (Swindon, loan), Caleb Chukwuemeka (Livingston, loan), Aaron Ramsey (Cheltenham, loan), Jaden Philogene-Bidace (Stoke, loan), Jed Steer (Luton, loan), Kaine Kesler Hayden (MK Dons, loan), Tyreik Wright (Colchester, loan)

Overview: Villa took the league by surprise with a string of stellar signings. Nobody forecasted superstar Coutinho’s arrival at the start of the window and, in Digne, they have signed one of the Premier League’s best left-backs.

New manager Steven Gerrard clearly has pulling power due to his playing career and they used that to their advantage last month.

2. Newcastle: B+

In: Bruno Guimaraes (Lyon, £35m), Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid, £12m), Chris Wood (Burnley, £25m), Dan Burn (Brighton, undisclosed), Matt Targett (Aston Villa, loan)

Out: Rosaire Longelo (Accrington, undisclosed), Joe White (Hartlepool, loan), Freddie Woodman (Bournemouth, loan), Matthew Bondswell (Shrewsbury, loan), Elliot Anderson (Bristol Rovers, loan), Matty Longstaff (Mansfield, loan), Jeff Hendrick (QPR, loan).

Overview: The eyes of the footballing world fell on Tyneside as the new mega-rich owners got the chance to exert their power.

The window was used to bandage up a disastrous season by signing Premier League-proven players. Trippier is a real coup - as is Lyon’s Guimaraes - but the jury is still out on Wood.

The Magpies' business would have earned an A if top targets Sven Botman or Diego Carlos had signed but, due to the Magpies’ perilous league position, those deals broke down.

If Newcastle do go down, it will not be down to a lack of effort from the new regime.

3. Everton: B

In: Donny Van De Beek (Manchester United, loan), Vitalii Mykolenko (Dynamo Kiev, undisclosed), Nathan Patterson (Rangers, £11m), Anwar El Ghazi (Aston Villa, loan), Dele Alli (Tottenham, undisclosed)

Out: Lucas Digne (Aston Villa, £25m), Ellis Simms (Hearts, loan), Lewis Warrington (Tranmere, loan)

Overview: An average window turned into an excellent one on deadline day with the arrival of Dele Alli and Donny van der Beek.

Those two signings, alongside Mykolenko earlier in the window and the appointment of Frank Lampard, has reignited the feel-good factor at Goodison Park ahead of their clash with Newcastle.

4. Liverpool: B

In: Luis Diaz (Porto, £37.5m)

Out: Nat Phillips (Bournemouth, loan), Morgan Boyes (Livingston, free), Tony Gallacher (St Johnstone, free), Neco Williams (Fulham, loan)

Overview: Similar to rivals Everton, their window seems relatively quiet until they sprung to action late on.

Signing one of the brightest talents in Europe in Diaz while getting Phillips off the books can be seen as a success for Liverpool.

5. Brentford: C

In: Christian Eriksen (free), Jonas Lossl (Midtjylland, loan)

Out: Charlie Goode (Sheffield United, loan), Dominic Thompson (Ipswich, loan), Marcus Forss (Hull, loan)

Overview: The Bees have taken a risk by signing Eriksen following his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.

However, if the Dane is half the player he showed while at Spurs, Brentford will flourish from a solid Premier League side into an exciting one.

6. Watford: C

In: Hassane Kamara (Nice, £4m), Samir (Udinese, undisclosed), Samuel Kalu (Bordeaux, undisclosed)

Out: Pontus Dahlberg (Gillingham, loan)

Overview: Newcastle’s relegation rivals bolstered their ranks with four winter signings last month.

Perhaps their shrewdest addition, however, comes on the managerial front, with Claudio Ranieri - an appointment that was never going to work - being replaced by Roy Hodgson.

7. Wolves: C-

In: Hwang Hee-chan (RB Leipzig, £14m), Hayao Kawabe (Grasshopper Club Zurich, undisclosed), Chiquinho (Estoril, £3m)

Out: Adama Traore (Barcelona, loan), Dion Sanderson (QPR, loan), Luke Matheson (Scunthorpe, loan), Theo Corbeanu (MK Dons, loan), Lewis Richards (Harrogate, loan), Austin Samuels (Inverness, undisclosed), Bruno Jordao (Grasshopper Club Zurich, loan)

Overview: A bittersweet window for Wolves fans saw their club sign on-loan sensation Hee-chan permanently but lose Traore to Barcelona in a bizarre loan deal.

They made three other low-key signings but it is hard to say Wolves have improved after offloading such an important player.

8. Man City: C-

In: Julian Alvarez (River Plate, undisclosed)

Out: Ferran Torres (Barcelona, £46.3m), Julian Alvarez (River Plate, loan), Taylor Harwood-Bellis (Stoke, loan), Tommy Doyle (Cardiff, loan), James Trafford (Bolton, loan), Patrick Roberts (Sunderland, free), Finley Burns (Swansea, loan), Camron Gbadebo (Colchester, undisclosed), Matthew Smith (MK Dons, undisclosed), Sammy Robinson (Port Vale, undisclosed), Luke Bolton (Salford, undisclosed)

Overview: Man City usually do their business in the summer. With Pep Guardiola's side coasting at the top of the table, there was no need for a marquee arrival.

They turned over a huge profit by selling Torres to Barcelona and signed Argentine sensation Alvarez from River Plate.

9. Burnley: C-

In: Wout Weghorst (Wolfsburg, undisclosed)

Out: Chris Wood (Newcastle, £25m), Jacob Bedeau (Morecambe, loan), Anthony Glennon (Barrow, loan)

Overview: The window started off brutally for Burnley once Newcastle poached star striker Wood for £25million.

However, Weghorst arrives from Wolfsburg with a fierce reputation and could prove an invaluable signing if he scores the goals to keep the Clarets up.

10. Brighton: C-

In: Kacper Kozlowski (Pogon Szczecin, undisclosed), Deniz Undav (Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, undisclosed)

Out: Dan Burn (Newcastle, undisclosed), Aaron Connolly (Middlesbrough, loan), Christian Walton (Ipswich, undisclosed), Jurgen Locadia (Bochum, undisclosed), Leo Ostigard (Genoa, loan), Kacper Kozlowski (Royale Union St-Gilloise, loan), Taylor Richards (Birmingham, loan), Lorent Tolaj (Cambridge, loan), Ryan Longman (Hull, undisclosed)

Overview: The Seagulls will be banking on Undav being the striker they desperately crave. Kozlowski is billed as one for the future, but they will be disappointed to see first-choice defender Burn leave for Newcastle.

11. Crystal Palace: D

In: Jean-Philippe Mateta (Mainz, undisclosed), Luke Plange (Derby, undisclosed)

Out: Jake O'Brien (Swindon, loan), Jay Rich-Baghuelou (Accrington, undisclosed), Ollie Webber (Portsmouth, undisclosed), Rob Street (Newport, loan), Ollie Webber (Portsmouth, undisclosed), Luke Plange (Derby, loan)

Overview: A quiet window in South London as Patrick Vieira made few additions to his squad. A typical window for a mid-table side that has no real threat of going down.

12. Spurs: D

In: Rodrigo Bentancur (Juventus, initial £15.8m), Dejan Kulusevski (Juventus, loan)

Out: Tanguy Ndombele (Lyon, loan), Bryan Gil (Valencia, loan), Giovani Lo Celso (Villarreal, loan), Jack Clarke (Sunderland, loan), Kion Etete (Cheltenham, loan), Dilan Markandy (Blackburn, undisclosed), Nile John (Charlton, loan)

Overview: Do not let two late arrivals from Juventus fool you - Spurs had a poor transfer window.

Allowing Lo Celso, Ndombele and Alli to leave is Antonio Conte putting his stamp on the squad but they failed to replace them sufficiently.

13. Chelsea: D

In: Dylan Williams (Derby, undisclosed)

Out: Lewis Baker (Stoke, undisclosed), Jamie Cumming (MK Dons, loan), Juan Castillo (Charlton, loan), Tariq Uwakwe (Crewe, undisclosed), Tino Anjorin (Huddersfield, loan)

Overview: Chelsea's January window is a far cry from the days that saw them breaking the British transfer record to sign Fernando Torres all those years ago.

No major incoming or outgoings at Stamford Bridge.

14. Leicester: D

In: None

Out: Filip Benkovic (Udinese, free), Jacob Wakeling (Barrow, loan), Kasey McAteer (Forest Green, loan), Josh Eppiah (Northampton, loan), Sam Hughes (Burton, undisclosed)

Overview: Similar to Man City, Leicester prefer to do business in the summer when the market is not as volatile.

Brendan Rodgers still has a strong enough squad for the second half of the campaign.

15. Norwich: D-

In: None

Out: Todd Cantwell (Bournemouth, loan), Onel Hernandez (Birmingham, loan), Bali Mumba (Peterborough, loan), Tom Dickson-Peters (Gillingham, loan), Tyrese Omotoye (Carlisle, loan), Rocky Bushiri (Hibernian, loan), Gassan Ahadme (Burton, undisclosed), Sebastian Soto (Livingston, loan), Jordan Hugill (Cardiff, loan)

Overview: While all of Norwich's relegation rivals strengthened, they chose not to - a decision that could haunt them if they are relegated in May.

16. Man Utd: D-

In: None

Out: Donny Van De Beek (Everton, loan), Anthony Martial (Sevilla, loan), Axel Tuanzebe (Napoli, loan), Amad Diallo (Rangers, loan), Teden Mengi (Birmingham, loan), Ethan Laird (Bournemouth, loan), Reece Devine (Walsall, loan)

Overview: A terrible window for the Red Devils. They failed to even try and sign the holding midfielder they need while allowing van der Beek and Martial - who cost almost £90million combined - to leave on loan.

17. West Ham: D-

In: None

Out: Conor Coventry (MK Dons, loan), Mipo Odubeko (Doncaster, loan)

Overview: The Hammers were in the market for a centre-back and a centre forward... and got neither.

Claims of a Kalvin Phillips bid has been questioned by supporters as David Moyes' squad looks light ahead of the Premier and Europa League crunch.

18 Southampton D-

In: None

Out: Kayne Ramsay (Ross County, loan), Dan Nlundulu (Cheltenham, loan), Caleb Watts (Crawley, loan), Dynel Simeu (Carlisle, loan)

Overview: The Saints didn't add to their squad, but equally didn't lose any key players.

19. Leeds - E

In: Mateo Joseph Fernandez (Espanyol, undisclosed)

Out: Cody Drameh (Cardiff, loan), Ryan Edmondson (Port Vale, loan)

Overview: Leeds have suffered up front all season due to Patrick Bamford's injury woes but failed to sign an adequate backup.

Central midfield was another problem area ignored. If Marcelo Bielsa's men get dragged into the relegation fight, the Whites' hierarchy will have a lot to answer for.

20. Arsenal - F

In: None

Out: Calum Chambers (Aston Villa, undisclosed), Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Roma, loan), Sead Kolasinac (Marseille, free), Pablo Mari (Udinese, loan), Folarin Balogun (Middlesbrough, loan), Harry Clarke (Hibernian, loan), Brooke Norton-Cuffy (Lincoln, loan), Karl Hein (Reading, loan), Tyreece John-Jules (Sheffield Wednesday, loan), Ryan Alebiosu (Crewe, loan), Jordi Osei-Tutu (Rotherham, loan)

Overview: What a mess. Arsenal offloaded four first-team players - including their former captain - while bringing in nobody.

The Gunners' still have a lot to play for this season but have shot themselves in the foot this month.
