Ranking Commanders 25 most important players for 2023: No. 14

As we look toward the 2023 regular season, we count down the most important players for the Washington Commanders ahead of training camp. On Tuesday, No. 15 was tight end Logan Thomas.

We continue our countdown today with No. 14, rookie cornerback Emmanuel Forbes.

The Commanders went into the offseason with two major priorities: Offensive line and cornerback. Washington addressed the offensive line in free agency and used the 2023 NFL draft to address cornerback.

With the No. 16 overall pick, the Commanders selected Mississippi State cornerback Emmanuel Forbes. Washington chose Forbes with Christian Gonzalez on the board and considered moving up to secure Forbes.

Forbes quickly turned heads, with one coach saying the rookie was “really f—–g good.” When the Commanders opened OTAs, Forbes was matched up with Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson, winning some of those battles.

Forbes was brought to Washington to create turnovers. In three seasons at Mississippi State, Forbes recorded 13 interceptions, returning six for touchdowns — an FBS record.

Size was the only concern for Forbes ahead of the draft. Some felt his frame was too slight, as he weighed 166 pounds. However, Forbes isn’t afraid to be physical in the run game and never missed a college game due to injury.

Teams expect their first-round pick to contribute immediately. The Commanders feel the same with Forbes. While Washington had Kendall Fuller and Benjamin St-Juste, little depth existed behind them. Now, the Commanders have three starting-quality corners, but one injury puts them back in the same position as before.

Washington believes Forbes can be a difference-maker on day one. He should start on the outside immediately, and don’t be surprised if he makes an early impact. Coaches are excited about Forbes and what he can bring to an already good defense.
