MUMBAI: Riding on a massive 221-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Pradosh Ranjan Paul and Vijay Shankar, Tamil Nadu fought hard to deny Mumbai an outright win on Day 4 of the Ranji Trophy match.
The visiting team was dismissed for 548 after lunch in their second innings — a remarkable recovery after getting bundled out for 144 in the first — thus setting Mumbai a challenging target of 212 from the remaining 32 overs.
The hosts needed to score at more than six an over for an outright win and initially it did look like they were interested when openers Prithvi Shaw and Yashasvi Jaiswal took 11 off pacer L Vignesh’s first over.
TN skipper Baba Indrajith, however, spread the field out and pressed his left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore to control the game from there on.
On a sluggish Brabourne Stadium surface, Mumbai managed 137 for three before play was called off with Jaiswal remaining unbeaten on 66 off 60 deliveries and Sarfaraz Khan on 15.
