Rangers warned beating self destructive duds doesn't matter as one Celtic fan celebrates Ibrox glory - Hotline

Rangers' result in Europe had their fans hogging the Hotline and, believe it or not, even one or two from across the city added their congratulations.

Alan McGaw, Alloa, emailed: “Well done Rangers - job done making up for last week’s debacle. The noise level when the 3rd went in was unbelievable bringing back European nights again. How Tillman got up above the goalkeeper was like an American basketball dunk but with the head. Congratulations to the team with another level next vs PSV.”

Andrew Lamb, Fraserburgh, said: “Despite seeing last night’s game at Ibrox as mission impossible, can I congratulate the Rangers team on a magnificent win? Only the same level of performance will see them triumph over PSV, who are a crack side." John Davidson, Armadale, said: “What a night at Ibrox, with Rangers overcoming the 2-0 deficit to progress to the next round. Onwards and upwards.”

Even Celtic fan Bud Hay , from Dumfries, was happy, saying: “Well done Rangers - you were not playing much but I put 50 quid on at 13/5 so you won me £130. Good on you.”

And Eddie Easson, Ballingry, Fife added: “Credit where it is due - well done Rangers. Halfway there, just PSV to take care of. No doubt a lot of absent friends will reappear on the Hotline now. Welcome back.”

Dr Robert Pender emailed: “Was surprised there was no TV coverage from broadcasters of Rangers’ European game. I feel it was disrespectful to the Scottish game. Glad Rangers TV covered it with excellent professionalism.”

*Rangers chose not to sell rights to the game on this occasion, Robert.

Tam Williamson, Lanarkshire, emailed: “Before the tie no one outside of Belgium had EVER heard of Union SG. There is no doubt Rangers deserved to win but I find it astonishing that they are gloating about winning by the odd goal against a very poor self destructive outfit who could only be compared with any Scottish Championship outfit on a good day. You couldn’t make it up.”

Chris Lowe, Yoker, wasn’t happy with the refereeing at the Ross County-Celtic game, saying: “I take it the compliance officer is no longer a thing with Joe Hart’s elbow assault on the Ross County player ignored by all and sundry. I remember Kyogo got a penalty for getting his hair ruffled for a less forceful challenge against Livingston last season.

"But then again it was Don Robertson at the weekend so Celtic had carte blanche to do what they want, including jumping into the crowd with no action taken."

But Henry Moffat, Stirling , disagrees, saying: “What a load of nonsense about the Jenz celebration. You are lucky if refs book players for it 50 per cent of the time and I can remember callers from the Hotline phoning in when a Rangers player wasn’t booked for it last season. It’s just the same old names trying to pressure referees and they will fail the same as they did last year. We are simply a better team and they know it.”

Charles Buchanan asked: “Why do punters on here keep going on about Jota? If they can’t see he’s a top class player then they don’t know much about football. Take your tinted glasses off for goodness sake. And enjoy the talent he brings to Scottish football.”

Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon , said: “It’s quite funny to hear fans of other clubs having a go at Hibs fans. Every club has this element of fans who are uncontrollable. Some fans run on the pitch, attack a manager, and get off with it.”

Harry Smith emailed: It was interesting to see Clyde thinking about relocating to Glasgow. I always thought they should have gone to East Kilbride where easier access for some of the supporters they might get some support back.”

Finally, tennis fan Carl McCoy, Paisley, said: “With Serena Williams announcing her retirement from tennis the debate on who is the GOAT has reignited. We will never really know but can’t we just accept that down the years, Serena along with Navratilova, Graf, Barker and Hingis, has been a great champion.”
