Rangers warn fans of ‘challenging trip’ ahead of Europa League clash with Fenerbahce

Rangers have acknowledged that their upcoming Europa League Round of 16 away match against Fenerbahce in Istanbul presents a “challenging trip” for supporters, particularly concerning safety, policing, and stadium facilities.

The first leg is scheduled for Thursday, March 6, with a 5.45pm kick-off (UK time) at Fenerbahce’s Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.

In preparation for the Istanbul fixture, Rangers are collaborating with UEFA, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and Football Supporters Europe (FSE) to ensure a smooth experience for traveling fans.

Supporters are advised to congregate at Sultanahmet Square, from where police-escorted buses will transport them to the stadium. A return bus ticket will cost £20, which is on top of the £34 it will set you back to attend the game.

Given Istanbul’s heavy traffic, the journey may exceed 45 minutes, and facilities on the buses will be limited.

Rangers firmly state: Do not attempt to use public transport to travel to the stadium on matchday.

They also reference how the visit will coincide with Ramadan, which is a worldwide Muslim tradition.

"Our visit coincides with Ramadan, which is expected to begin on 28 February 2025," a Rangers update read.

"While this should not significantly impact travelling supporters, please be respectful of local customs:

  • Avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing gum in public during daylight hours. Bars and restaurants will be available.
  • Avoid playing loud music or dancing in public spaces.
  • Refrain from swearing in public.

"We kindly ask all supporters to respect local customs and laws throughout their visit."

Supporters attending the game should be prepared for a series of security checks, including a thorough body search carried out by private security under police supervision.

Meanwhile, after the final whistle, there will be a mandatory hold-back period during which all fans must stay inside the stadium until the buses are ready for departure. Based on past fixtures, this hold-back may last between 90 minutes and 2 hours. Once the buses are ready, they will escort fans back to the meeting point at Sultanahmet Square. Those staying on the Asian side of the city can make arrangements for a return trip by contacting the club in advance.

Rangers also point out that Fenerbahce’s stadium offers limited facilities, including restricted access to toilets.

The Scottish Premiership giants suggest to avoid wearing club colours where possible.
