Rangers WAGs fled in terror after Celtic fans launched glass bottles at Old Firm clash

Rangers players’ wives fled in terror after Celtic fans launched glass bottles into the away support during Sunday’s Old Firm match.

The three women were with friends when Buckfast bottles, lighters and other missiles rained down at full-time.

Supporters clashed in the stands at Parkhead with video footage showing objects hurled by both sets of fans.

Some Gers fans tried to help the players’ frightened partners escape the chaos which erupted in the wake of the 1-1 draw.

But it was claimed police refused to let the women leave.

Rangers said they were “disappointed” with the police response for leaving supporters “unprotected”.

One fan was hit on the head with a Buckfast bottle and another sustained a hand injury trying to stop a bottle, witnesses have said.

It’s understood the women, who we have agreed not to name, have complained through Rangers about security arrangements and how police handled the incident.

One source said: “A number of Rangers players’ wives joined friends in the away end for the match.

“They were among a group of women who were helped get to the front of the queue for the exit when bottles started being thrown into the away support.

“The police wouldn’t let them out though. Lighters and plastic bottles were also thrown into the crowd. You could hear glass smashing.”

Last night Chief Superintendent Stevie Dolan said: “Police are conducting enquiries into missiles that were thrown between groups of supporters at the end of the match at Celtic Park on Sunday.

“Officers are liaising with both Celtic Football Club and Rangers Football Club.”

Chief Supt Dolan previously said that “Police Scotland had a proportionate plan in place to support the safety operation” at the game.

He added one of the missiles struck an officer who was “not serious injured”.

Eight people were arrested for offences including disorder, pyrotechnics and religiously aggravated offences.

Celtic said its supporters and stewards were also hit by missiles, including seats from the stands.

A club spokesperson said: “It is extremely regrettable that again our supporters have been targeted with missiles, resulting in injury to fans and stewards.

“We will be liaising with all relevant parties in order that a range of issues are addressed.”

Rangers were approached for comment.
