Rangers VAR penalty decision sparks 'mind boggling' reaction as pundits agree over big call at Ibrox

Rangers' conceding a penalty for a handball was 'mind boggling' according to some pundits after an afternoon of drama at Ibrox.

The Light Blues sealed progression in to the Scottish Cup quarter-final in a 3-2 thriller with Partick Thistle with a decision from official David Munro to award a spot kick to the Scottish Championship side after a handball from striker Antonio Colak sparking controversy in the first half. VAR was consulted before the official confirmed the penalty and Kevin Holt made no mistake from the spot.

That was before Rangers were awarded their own spot kick after Malik Tillman was pulled down seemingly outside the box but James Tavernier couldn't convert the chance in an eventual dogged win. But former Ibrox defender Alan Hutton and pundit Marvin Bartley were left bewildered at the handball decision, with both calling for more clarity.

Hutton said on Viaplay Sports: "It's such a difficult one. For me it's not a penalty - I don't know what he is supposed to do.

"He's going up to try and header the ball, it's gone over his head and he has a second to react as it is coming back so quickly. The arm is there to help you to stay on your feet. For me I can't understand how that is given."

Bartley went further, saying: "Alan is being nice there. For me that is never ever a penalty kick. The fact that it has been given, that the referee has checked it and decided it is a penalty is mind boggling. He's got his hands in the air to protect himself first and foremost.

"There is no way he can intentionally hand ball that. Sooner or later this rule has to change or people who are controlling the rules need to look at it. We're going to have so many penalties every game...it's not acceptable."
