Rangers urged to hand 'model professional' new contract as Premiership duo look to snap up Ibrox ace for free

Rangers have been told that offering Steven Davis an extended contract would be a wise move amid Motherwell interest in the midfielder.

Appearances in the Europa League and Scottish Cup finals last week showed no signs that the midfielder is slowing down despite hitting 38 next term.

His Rangers future is up in the air though with his contract set to expire this summer after 33 appearances in the 2021/22 season.

Motherwell and St Mirren are two clubs said to be interested in signing him up should he not remain at the Premiership runners-up.

Ibrox hero and former teammate Barry Ferguson reckons that Davis can still cut it at Ibrox and still has so much to offer Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men.

Fir Park boss Graham Alexander has already let go of midfielders Mark O'Hara, Liam Donnelly, Liam Shaw and Liam Grimshaw ahead of the summer window.

Speaking on Go Radio, Ferguson said: "I am not being disrespectful (to Motherwell or St Mirren) but he still has the capability to play at Rangers.

"There's no doubt about it. He might not start every game now but he is a model professional.

"He looks after himself and I would love to see him sign a contract extension and be there next season for Rangers."
