Rangers have "let Celtic off the hook" in the title race after blowing an opportunity to go within a point of their fierce rivals.
That's according to Davie Provan, a former Hoops midfielder, following the concession of the Light Blues two-goal lead against Motherwell on Sunday.
Ange Postecoglou's men drew the 12pm kick-off against Hibs at Easter Road, providing Rangers the perfect opportunity to close in on the Scottish Premiership's top-placed team.
But after breezing into a comfortable first-half lead, courtesy of goals from Alfredo Morelos and Fashion Sakala, Gio van Bronckhorst's side were undone by goals from Jordan Roberts and Kaiyne Woolery in the second 45.
"I think Rangers let Celtic off the hook at the weekend," Provan told the Go Radio Football Show.
"I mean, away to Hibs at Easter Road is always a tricky game and it was always likely that Celtic could drop something.
"But, having done that, for Rangers to slip and blow a two-goal lead was more or less unthinkable.
"You wonder how vital that might be at the end of the season.
"The only thing for me is that Rangers played really well, certainly in the first half - they looked as if they were going to blow Motherwell away, so to end up dropping two points must be hugely disappointing for GVB."
Barry Ferguson, a Rangers legend after two successful spells at Ibrox, criticised his old team's defensive display.
He said: "As soon as Motherwell scored the goal, I got a nervous feeling when I was watching the game.
"A lot of people are saying Rangers are not ruthless in front of goal, but you've got to also be ruthless defensively.
"The two goals that Rangers conceded, I'm sure Giovanni won't be happy with them."
