Rangers transfer update as striker 'target' set to link up with Franck Ribery in Serie A

Rangers striker target Erik Botheim is set to join Serie A club Salernitana after a number of teams tried to convince the Norwegian to join them.

It was reported in Norway earlier in this summer transfer window that claims Rangers had at least enquired about Botheim were true as they look to beef up the Ibrox striker department alongside Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe. Ligue 1 side Marseille were also reported as potential suitors for the Norwegian but nothing came of it.

He has been has been without a club since choosing to end his contract with Russian club Krasnodar in May due to the war in Ukraine and Norwegian broadcaster TV 2 now report that he is set to move to Italy's top flight, one of Europe's top five leagues. Salernitana narrowly escaped relegation last term by finishing 17th in the 20 team league and they are captained by French football and Bayern Munich legend Franck Ribery.

Krasnodar aren't happy though that Botheim terminated the contract and Galatasaray are still in the fight for him, as 'the uncertain legal situation of Botheim means that things can turn upside down.'

However, Salernitana are in the 'driver's seat.' Rangers have already moved on to other transfer targets with PAOK striker Antonio Colak on their radar.

It's been a quiet summer for Ibrox boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst so far, who has only signed Scotland defender John Souttar this window.

Botheim agreed a move to Russia in December but didn't take to the pitch for Krasnodar, having scored 22 times with 10 assists at previous club Bodo/Glimt.
