Rangers transfer update as 'clear run' at Ross Barkley emerges after English clubs make decision

Rangers will have a 'clear run' at former Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley if they want to bring him on board after English Premier League clubs opted against a move.

The England international was released from his contract at Stamford Bridge earlier this week as he searches for his next opportunity. He has been linked with a move to join Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Ibrox with Alan Nixon of The Sun reporting that two English clubs decided against a move for the midfielder.

That has now left the door open for the Light Blues to snap up the 28-year-old and boost their ranks if they want to do a deal as they bid to recapture the Premiership title from Celtic and make a splash in the Champions League this season after reaching the lucrative group stages.

Rangers overcame two qualifying rounds - including a stunning win in the Netherlands over PSV - to secure their spot at Europe's top table. They will come up against Liverpool, Ajax and Napoli in their section with the action getting underway next week.

It's been a busy summer of transfer activity at Ibrox to date with Van Bronckhorst adding to his ranks for his first full campaign in charge. Antonio Colak has been outstanding since his arrival as he continues to bang in the goals.

The likes of Rabbi Matondo, Tom Lawrence, Ben Davies, Ridvan Yilmaz and John Souttar have all arrived at the club during the window - that gets set to slam shut for clubs in Scotland at midnight tonight.

Barkley, 28, has also turned out at Everton, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and Aston Villa during his career to date.
