Rangers transfer state of play as Morgan Whittaker offer 'turned down' while Todd Cantwell options open up

We are at the midway point in the January transfer window and Rangers fans are still waiting for Michael Beale to make his first new recruit.

The fans have enjoyed the tactical tweaks that have seen Beale go unbeaten since arriving from Queens Park Rangers and reach the Viaplay Cup final with a win over Aberdeen, but now it's time for the done deals to arrive at Ibrox. Sporting director Ross Wilson and co will be working hard on deals behind the scenes with the team improving on the park, with Todd Cantwell the name on everyone's minds.

However, there is much more going on behind the scenes at Ibrox beyond the Norwich City man with Beale setting his sights on silverware and closing the gap on Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic. That could see the likes of Alfredo Morelos head out of the door with his contract nearing an end.

But what is top of the Light Blues' agenda? Record Sport takes a look.

Morgan Whittaker

Rangers are reportedly keen on snapping up Swansea City forward Morgan Whittaker this month, amid suggestions a bid for the Scottish Premiership side has already been "turned down". The 22-year-old enjoyed an impressive first half of the season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, and was recalled by Russell Martin earlier this month after nine goal in English League One. However, he has not made an appearance since return to the Swans and the Championship side are weighing up allowing him to leave permanently this month to fund their promotion push. Wales Online report Rangers are the first club to make their move. Boss Martin last week confirmed they have already turned down a bid from one club for the 22-year-old. It's now reported the offer was from The Light Blues.

Todd Cantwell

Rangers are reportedly facing competition from PSV Eindhoven to land Norwich City star Todd Cantwell. The Eredivise title challengers are looking to fill the void left by Cody Gakpo, and could turn to the 24-year-old who is on his way out of Carrow Road.

Cantwell has experience of Dutch football having spent time on loan at Fortuna Sittard, and could also provide cover for Joey Veerman, who is now being touted with a move to the English Premier League. Voetbal Primeur claim Manchester United are considering a move for the former Rangers target.

Alfredo Morelos

Tigres look to have moved on from their bid to land Alfredo Morelos after they pulled out of the race to land Eintracht Frankfurt star Rafael Santos Borre - only to snap up £7million recruit Nicolas Ibanez. However, the Colombian has reportedly emerged as a plan B for another club. Turkish outlet Posta report Fenerbahce are keeping tabs on the striker, who is out of contract at the end of the campaign. However, Haji Wright Antalyaspor is their top target and they are waiting their rivals to respond to a £8.6million bid.

Dion Sanderson

Dion Sanderson has been touted with a move north of the border after impressing for Birmingham City on loan from Premier League outfit Wolves. However, Rangers look set to miss out on a deal. Sanderson is a key man for boss John Eustace at the heart of the defence as they look to avoid the drop to English League One. Birmingham Live report he will remain at City for the rest of the season.
