Rangers transfer round up as Keanu Baccus emerges as midfield option for Michael Beale

A solution to Rangers ’ midfield conundrum issues may have presented itself closer to home.

Michael Beale has reportedly sent his scouts to run the rule over St Mirren’s World Cup star Keanu Baccus. After an impressive first half season in Paisley, Baccus was included in graham Arnold’s Australia squad for the World Cup in Qatar, and the Buddies midfielder was a key man as the Socceroos reached the last 16 stage before being knocked out by eventual winners Argentina.

Interest was already high in Baccus from England. But now it’s claimed that the Ibrox club are considering a move for the 24-year-old, who was born in Durban, South Africa. Beale will be without Steven Davis for the remainder of the season after he was ruled out through injury. Looking further ahead, Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield are both out of contract in the summer and as things stand, the engine room options could be thin on the ground.

Apparent target Nicolas Raskin looks certain to leave Standard Liege. However, Baccus familiarity with the Scottish Premiership and comparatively lower wages make him an appealing option for Beale this January. St Mirren would likely hold out for a bumper transfer fee, especially given the attention in Baccus following his displays in Qatar.

Between the sticks, a decision will have to be made by or on Allan McGregor. The veteran keeper penned a one-year extension last summer, but this looks certain to be his final season as aplayer at Ibrox. Jon McLaughlin is his No. 2, but Rangers have reportedly made Asmir Begovic a target for the summer window.

At 35, Begovic is the same age as Mclaughlin but would represent an experienced and high pedigree option as a new first choice. A couple of good seasons out of the former Stoke City and Chelsea keeper could give Robby McCrory the space he needs to eventually take on the No. 1 jersey, although whether the young keeper is prepared to wait and go out on loan again remains to be seen.

Manchester City's James Trafford has also been linked. He's currently on loan at Bolton Wanderers but Gers are reportedly considering a January move.
