Rangers transfer news and the latest on striker 'targets' Colak, Botheim, Cassierra and Archer

Rangers have been linked with a host of strikers as the Europa League finalists look to bolster their frontline so they have the firepower to shoot them into the Champions League group stage and earn the £40 million golden ticket at the top table of the continent's premier competition.

The Ibrox side lost veteran Jermain Defoe when he left the club during the last campaign and Cedric Itten has also returned to Switzerland before the 2022/23 Scottish Premiership season kicks off, joining BSC Young Boys, leaving the Light Blues a bit short on attacking options.

And there is of course the speculation over the future of Alfredo Morelos. Will the Colombian remain at Ibrox this season as we prepare for another summer of transfer noise around the South American. But, regardless of whether Morelos stays or goes, the Ibrox side could do with at least one other quality striker.

Record Sport have laid out the Rangers' forward links, providing the latest updates on Gio van Bronckhorst's reported frontline targets this transfer window.

Antonio Colak

Reports in Greece said Rangers had a bid rejected for the Croatian striker. The Ibrox side have submitted an official proposal in a bid to bring the 28-year-old POAK striker to the Scottish Premiership.

Gers fans may remember Colak, but not for the right reasons. The forward scored twice for Malmo in summer 2021 as the Swedes dumped Rangers out of Champions League in front of an Ibrox crowd.

Colak scored 19 times during a successful loan spell at the Swedish club. But the frontman only managed to find the back of the net twice upon returning to POAK in January.

And now his parent club are open to offers, with the striker struggling to hold down a regular starting spot upon his return to Greece's Super League. It means that Rangers could secure the services of the striker for a bargain fee this summer with his current side desperate to move him on.

Politic state that Rangers initial offer was rebuffed as they did not meet the €2million (£1.7million) valuation. The player still has two years left on his contract at the Greek side.

Mateo Cassierra

Gio van Bronckhorst's side are set to miss out on Mateo Cassierra, according to reports. The star was in scintillating form for FC Sochi last season, with several clubs eyeing him up this summer.

The Colombian is said to have reached an agreement with another club this week, according to his agent. Speaking to Sport24 , the forward's representative said: “Will Cassierra sign a contract with Zenit? We have agreed with the club.”

And now RBSports are reporting that the 25-year-old is closing in on a deal with the Petersburg outfit ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Erik Botheim

Rangers have 'enquired' about the potential signing of Erik Botheim, according to reports in Norway. The striker is a free agent this summer after his contract with Russian Premier League side Krasnodar was terminated amid the conflict between Russian and Ukraine.

The former Bodo/Glimt had scored seven goals in 14 appearances in European competitions for the Norwegian club before departing in January this year. The 22-year-old could be making his way to Ibrox this summer but it remains to be seen whether or not the inquiry leads to an official offer for the star or not.

Cameron Archer

Cameron Archer is gearing up for pre-season at his parent club, Aston Villa, after enjoyed a season on loan at Preston. Boss Steven Gerrard is set to evaluate his squad ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, with Archer a player the manager is keeping an eye one.

The 19-year-old produced several eye-catching displays last season during his time at the English Championship side. His performances have sparked interest, with Rangers in the hat for his signature on a temporary basis next season.

However, Rangers' chances of landing the Aston Villa striker appear to be fading. It comes as Preston gaffer Ryan Lowe insists the player has told him he wants to return to Deepdale if he doesn't receive a shot at Villa Park.
