Rangers transfer explained as 'fresh start' needed for 'huge potential' player after Ibrox exit

Dundee United head coach Jack Ross believes he is the man to unlock Glenn Middleton's full potential after his exit from Rangers.

The Scotland U21s international has signed a three-year deal at Tannadice to bring an end to his Ibrox stint one year before his 2023 contract expiry. Middleton's last 18 months have been spent at fellow Tayside club St Johnstone but now the winger will try his luck across the Premiership with United. Steven Gerrard handed him a five-year deal in 2018 alongside chances to impress but senior minutes have become limited at Rangers.

Ross said: "I’m really excited to have Glenn here. He will be a brilliant addition to our squad. The fans will see the quality he can provide on the pitch but it’s up to me to get that out of him on a consistent basis. I’ve spoken about Mathew Cudjoe’s impact and ability to eliminate players and produce something out of nothing and Glenn can do that too.

"Glenn brings an attacking intent to the group. He’s a player I’ve already worked with in the past - albeit for a relatively short time.

"But I’ve always watched his career to see how he is progressing. He’s a really young man but he has a huge amount of potential and there’s still a lot he can achieve in his career.

"He spent four years at Rangers but I think he needed a fresh start and he’s admitted that himself. He’s played well against my teams as an opposition manager and also against Dundee United. It’s down to me to help him showcase his ability all the time.

"For a young man he has a lot of game time behind him at international level. To play 22 times for Scotland under-21s is impressive but the next step for him is can he progress his international career further?

"He can only do that by being a successful player at Dundee United. I’m delighted we’ve been able to get him here on a permanent deal."
