Rangers SPFL cinch dispute 'not good' for Scottish football as SFA chief urges parties to reach neutral ground

Scottish FA chief executive Ian Maxwell says Rangers' dispute with the SPFL over the nation's main sponsor is unhealthy for the Scottish game.

Rangers will not be required to display the branding of title sponsor cinch after being excluded from a revised sponsorship contract with the SPFL. The Light Blues have been in dispute with the league's hierarchy over the past year since the car retail company began a deal that lasts until 2026 as the main backer of Scotland's professional leagues.

As a consequence, Rangers have refused to showcase the sponsor's logo within their stadium, on their strips or during media appearances as they claimed it was in conflict with a commercial agreement they already had in place with chairman Douglas Park's firm, Park's of Hamilton. The SPFL has now attempted to dilute the matter by agreeing a fresh deal with cinch that means Rangers are 'no longer required to participate by providing the sponsorship inventory that they have so far not provided.'

League statements claim the new agreement 'protects cinch's pivotal investment into Scottish football' and insists 'the overall income to Scottish football is expected to remain materially unchanged over the original five-year term of the sponsorship.'

While not directly involved with the matter, Maxwell knows that it hasn't been a good look for the game as a whole.

But, speaking on Sportsound, says it's not an SFA matter and that those involved must sort it out quick: "It's not good for the game.

"There's no doubt about that so there is an impact. We would love things to be resolved as quickly as possible but we need to wait and see what happens.

"It's not something for us to get involved. They need to sort it out by themselves. Anything we can do to make the game more attractive can only be a positive.

"Things like this, whatever form it takes, we should try and do everything we can to avoid it before it reaches the size and scale it has. But it's one for the SPFL and Rangers to sort."
