Former Celtic star Mark Wilson has shut down Rangers fans' hopes that the gap between the Light Blues and their rivals is getting narrower, making a mockery of the Gers board's recent words.
A 3-2 derby day win for Celtic at the weekend saw them go 12 points clear of their bitter rivals at the top of the Scottish Premiership, all but wrapping up a second consecutive title under Ange Postecoglou whilst remaining unbeaten in six league clashes against the Gers.
Despite the loss, Michael Beale has done a grand job at steering the ship; the loss at Parkhead was his first in the league since joining in November, with his only dropped points in the division coming against the Hoops. But speaking to Go Radio, Wilson sought to disavow the Ibrox faithful of the notion that they are getting closer to the champions, insisting that constant claims of closing the gap don't stand up to scrutiny.
The Gers have still dropped three more points than Celtic overall which has hampered their title chances - with Wilson detailing that you can't argue with facts. He said: "Rangers fans, I'm sure, don't want to hear that. I'm sure they want to hear 'we're progressing and we're getting better, we will beat Celtic next season, we feel we are getting closer.'
"It suggests that there isn't an awful long way to go to bridge the gap. That is all we are hearing at the minute from inside Rangers - 'the gap isn't that big, the gap, the gap, the gap'. Well the gap is big!
"In these individual games, the games might be tight but the gap is the league table, of 12 points and 29 goals. The gap is still the gap, that is a fact. Since Michael Beale took over, the gap was nine points - it's now 12 points.
Host of the show, Gordon Duncan, then quipped: "I get that, but if you and I were racing and I start a lap behind you, you'd at least at least take it into account! You don't get a trophy for it!
But Wilson hit back, saying: "He's made Rangers harder to beat in these games, but they are still beatable. And that is the thing. Okay, they are scoring and it's getting closer. They're still conceding three right enough. Is that any use to any Rangers fan out there?"
