Rangers player ratings v Aberdeen as Steven Gerrard's side earn opening day three points

Rangers got their Scottish Premiership campaign off a winning start at Pittodrie.

A first half Ryan Kent strike was enough to secure all three points for Steven Gerrard's men.

Rangers were in control of the match for large spells, and despite not being able to add to their lead they rarely looked in trouble defensively.

Andy Considine was sent off in the dying stages for a poor challenge on substitute Scott Arfield in what was a frustrating afternoon for Derek McInnes' side.

One of the big bonuses for Gerrard will no doubt be the performance of Leon Balogun, who made his debut at the heart of the Rangers defence.

Here we take a look at how Rangers' starting XI rated on the day.

Allan McGregor - 7

Didn't have much to do besides gather the ball during a frantic goal-line scramble.

No real saves of any note besides that. A quiet afternoon.

James Tavernier - 7

Didn't quite get forward as much as he usually would do, but dealt well with ex Celtic man Jonny Hayes.

Connor Goldson - 7

Looked solid enough alongside Balogun, and gave the Aberdeen forward players very little to go on.

Appeared to be hurt after a late Lewis Ferguson challenge in the final few minutes, but managed to play on.

Leon Balogun - 8

Looks like a player who wants to stride out of defence and play forward passes. Not content to just knock the ball out to the full-backs.

Collided with the post during the previously mentioned goal-line scramble, but was OK to continue.

Looks a solid defender who uses the ball well. Could be a superb signing for Rangers on early evidence. Aside from the three points, probably the biggest plus for Steven Gerrard on the day.

Borna Barisic - 7

Always trying to get forward down the left flank, and put crosses in.

His deliveries were, in the main, very good however none of them lead to anything.

Rarely troubled defensively.

Was one of Rangers' best players last season and not a lot seems to have changed on today's evidence.

Ryan Jack - 7

A strong, if understated performance, in Rangers' midfield.

Pressed the Aberdeen midfielders non-stop, and used the ball well as he often does.

Could have maybe taken the shot on a couple of times after finding himself on the ball on the edge of the area, but opted to pass instead.

Glen Kamara - 6

Along with Jack and Aribo controlled much of the match from the middle of the park from Rangers.

Rarely stands out but always seems to keep the team ticking over, and rarely wastes possession.

Could contribute more, but put in a decent enough showing.

Joe Aribo - 8

Rangers' Joe Aribo (SNS Group)

Started the match really strongly and was a top performer for Steven Gerrard's side.

Always seemed to be the guy striding forward with the ball, and trying to drive at the Dons backline. Showed some lovely touches throughout.

Aberdeen clearly identified him as Rangers' main threat given the close attention he was paid throughout.

Moved out to the right after Hagi was replaced by Arfield in the second half, but still found himself heavily involved.

Came so close to making it two with just a few minutes left but Ash Taylor's last-ditch challenge denied him.

Ianis Hagi - 6

Didn't quite work out for him. Not his best afternoon in a Rangers shirt, but still looked to create whenever he could.

Tried a number of shots from distance, and attempted several ambitious passes in the final third, one almost set Morelos up late on, but in the main things didn't quite come off for him.

Replaced by Arfield with 15 minutes left.

Ryan Kent - 7

Opened the scoring for Rangers with a cool finish but faded slightly as the match went on.

Actually had a good opportunity to net before his opener but the ball skipped away from him before he could get a touch.

Alfredo Morelos - 6

His clever pass set up Kent's opener but it was a quiet afternoon besides that.

Doesn't quite look at his sharpest just yet, but still popped up with a key moment for the first goal.

His shooting was wayward at times.
