Rangers thought they'd rescued a point at the death against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Cyriel Dessers burst the net with a superb touch and finish, but it wasn't to be as Bruno Fernandes sunk Scottish hearts a little over two minutes later.
It was a brave effort by a depleted Rangers side, but Ruben Amorim's team ran out 2-1 winners in the end.
Here is how we rated Philippe Clement's men...
Jack Butland 5
Will have been glad to get a feel for the ball at a tame Garnacho shot in the opening few minutes again after sitting on the sidelines for the past six weeks through injury. Made himself big, and was quick off his line, to deny Diallo a goal later in the first half. Denied Martinez’s long-range effort well. He suffered what can only be described as a howler against his former team by punching the ball into his own net when attempting to clear a corner from Eriksen. An extremely poor error from a keeper of his standing, rusty or not. Had a couple of decent stops after to somewhat redeem himself.
James Tavernier 7
Stepped up well, showing his intelligence to read the game, when a couple of loose passes were aimed in the direction of Garnacho. In a reshuffle at half-time, the skipper played the second half alongside Propper at centre-half. Was part of a solid defensive effort overall.
Robin Propper 7
Folded like a ‘pack of cards’ according to Rio Ferdinand on commentary duty at De Ligt’s disallowed goal. The centre-back did appear to hit the deck very easily, so he was perhaps lucky to get away with it. Did fine on the whole, helping to restrict United. That said, the narrow scoreline was more down to poor finishing from Amorim’s men.
Leon Balogun 6
Set the tone with a slide tackle of Zirkzee timed to absolute perfection inside the box. It looked like the Dutchman had beaten the 36-year-old for pace, but rather Balogun measured his challenge brilliantly. Was a huge blow when he had to go off with a knock at half time.
Jefte 5
He picked out Rice with a pinpoint cross in what was a decent opening. Had a shot of his own, but it was straight at the keeper. Let himself down badly by switching off to allow Fenandes a free shot on goal at the death to score the winner.
Nicolas Raskin 7
Had a golden opportunity to give his team a shock lead inside the opening few minutes. Unfortunately for the midfielder, the ball got stuck under his feet after Bajrami picked out his third-man run from the centre of the park. Put himself about.
Connor Barron 6
Looked like he’d managed to fend off an injury concern after going down with a knee complaint towards the end of the first half. While he managed to see it out until the break, Philippe Clement opted to take the young Scotland international off.
Ridvan Yilmaz 7
A defensive left-winger, given he’s naturally a left-back, it’s perhaps no surprise that he snatched at an early shooting chance at the back stick. In fairness, it was a tough shot with a first-time volley, having to take the ball out of the sky, but his effort was ultimately straight at Bayindir from relatively close range.
Nedim Bajrami 5
Showed a couple of nice touches, while also picking out his teammates on a couple of rare occasions where Rangers managed to get forward. Overall though, he looked off it. It wasn’t his best game.
Vaclav Cerny 6
Stung the palms of Bayindir with a pop from distance early in the second half after enduring a quiet first period. Was entitled to have a dig when he’s performed so well on this stage for Rangers. Was a THIRD player forced off with injury on the night.
Hamza Igamane 6
Had his first sight at goal on 38 minutes as he wasted no time in getting an effort – which was heavily deflected – off after receiving the ball in acres of space in front of United’s backline. Held off Mainoo excellently to thunder a cross into the mix for Jefte in a half-chance inside the final 15 minutes. Was guilty of holding onto the ball for too long at points.
Subs:
Ross McCausland (for Balogun, 46’) 5
Did his best to try impact the game, but struggled to make an influence.
Bailey Rice (for Barron, 46’) 7
Coped well considering his lack of first team experience. Showed his ability on the ball at points, looking assured and composed. Could’ve done better with Jefte’s cutback, where he blasted high over the bar. Clipped a lovely pass over the top for Dessers.
Findlay Curtis (for Cerny, 59’) 6
A massive moment for the 18-year-old in difficult circumstances. Did himself proud.
Cyriel Dessers (for Bajrami, 70’) 8
A stunning impact off the bench by the frontman who brushed Maguire off at ease, before producing a sensational touch and first-time finish to score a last-gasp equaliser. Sadly for him, it didn’t count for much in the end.
Leon King (for Yilmaz, 89’) 3
On for the final few minutes.
